Back to sport, not just out of pain
Sports Injuries
Shift Spinal Health · Adelaide
Getting out of pain is the easy part. Understanding why the injury happened, and returning to your sport less likely to do it again, is the part that matters. Here is how we approach it at Shift.
The Difference That Matters
Pain relief is not the same as recovery.
A sports injury can settle enough to feel better long before it is actually ready for the demands of your sport. That gap is where re-injury happens. Getting the pain down is the start, but returning safely means rebuilding the strength, control and capacity the injury took away, and understanding what set it up in the first place.
That is why care at Shift starts with an assessment rather than a generic treatment. We want to know what happened, why, and what your sport is going to ask of the injured area when you go back to it.
What We See
Common sports injuries.
We work across recreational and competitive sport, including running, gym and strength training, and team sports like football, soccer and basketball. The presentations tend to fall into a few groups.
Strains and sprains
Overstretched or overloaded muscles, tendons and ligaments, from a rolled ankle to a strained hamstring or a tweaked back.
Overuse injuries
Gradual, load-related problems that build up over time, such as tendon pain, shin and knee complaints, or a niggle that will not settle.
Spine and back injuries
Back and neck injuries from contact, lifting or repetitive load, where the spine is the structure taking the strain.
Recurring or unresolved
Old injuries that keep flaring, or ones that never fully recovered, where the underlying cause was never really addressed.
Knowing The Difference
When an injury needs urgent care.
Most sports injuries can wait for an assessment. A few signs mean you should seek urgent medical care straight away rather than book in.
Seek urgent care if you have
- An obvious deformity, or a joint that looks out of place
- An inability to bear weight on, or use, the injured limb
- Rapid or severe swelling, or numbness and loss of sensation
- A head knock with confusion, vomiting, or loss of consciousness
These need prompt medical or emergency assessment. After any significant injury where you are unsure, get it checked promptly rather than pushing through.
Our View
Rehab you can measure, not just rest.
Complete rest rarely gets an athlete back to full capacity. For most sports injuries, a graded return to load, guided by how the injury is responding, does more than sitting out and waiting. The aim is to bring the injured area back to the point where it can handle the specific demands of your sport, and to close the gaps that made it vulnerable.
If an injury needs a scan, a specialist opinion, or something outside our scope, we will say so and point you in the right direction.
How We Work
The Shift approach to sports injuries.
Care at Shift is structured and active. It starts with understanding the injury, then works through settling it, rebuilding capacity, and getting you back to your sport.
Assess first
Everything starts with an assessment. A clinician examines the injured area, talks through how it happened, your sport and your goals, and works out what is driving the problem.
Settle the injury
Hands-on chiropractic care and soft tissue work to help calm symptoms and restore movement, matched to the injury and the stage it is at.
Rebuild capacity
Guided rehabilitation to rebuild strength, control and load tolerance, phased up toward the demands of your sport using our rehab gym and app.
Return to sport
A graded return so you go back when the area can actually handle it, with progress tracked using the Shift Score rather than guessed at.
Is It For You
Who this suits.
Our structured approach is built for people who:
- Want to understand why the injury happened, not just quiet the pain
- Keep re-injuring the same area, or never fully recovered from an old one
- Have a specific sport or event they are working back toward
- Want to take an active part in their recovery, not just be treated
- Prefer a clear, structured path over open-ended visits
Whether you are a weekend runner, a gym regular, or playing competitively, the plan is matched to your sport and the demands you are returning to.
Questions
Sports injuries, answered.
Yes. Shift Spinal Health provides assessed, non-surgical care for sports injuries at two Adelaide clinics, Allenby Gardens and Malvern. Care combines chiropractic care and rehabilitation, and starts with an assessment to work out what happened and how to reduce the chance of it recurring.
It depends on the injury and the stage. Early on, some injuries need relative rest and protection, but most recover better with a graded return to load rather than complete rest. The assessment works out where yours sits and what loading is safe now.
By working out why it happened, not just settling the pain. That means looking at the movement patterns, strength gaps and load history behind the injury, then building a rehabilitation plan that addresses them so you return to your sport more resilient than before.
Seek urgent medical care for an obvious deformity, an inability to bear weight or use the limb, rapid or severe swelling, numbness or a loss of sensation, or a head knock with confusion, vomiting or loss of consciousness. When in doubt after a significant injury, get it assessed promptly.
